Amazon requires product images to be at least 1000 pixels on the longest side, and main images must have a pure white background. Images that don't meet these specs are rejected at upload. Resize and compress your product photos here — no software, no upload.

How to prepare product images for Amazon

  1. Check the background. The MAIN image must have a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255). If your photo was taken on off-white or grey, use the background removal + white background tool before compressing.
  2. Check pixel size. Your image must be at least 1000 px on the longest side. For zoom quality, aim for 1600–2000 px. Resize here if needed.
  3. Ensure the product fills 85% of the frame. Amazon will suppress or reject main images where the product appears small relative to the image area. Crop tightly around the product, leaving a small white margin.
  4. Compress to JPEG under 3 MB. Amazon accepts up to 10 MB, but images over 3 MB upload slowly in Seller Central. Use this tool to compress to JPEG at 85–90% quality — typically 300 KB–1.5 MB for a 1600 px product image.
  5. Upload via Seller Central. Go to your listing → Manage Images → Upload. Amazon processes the image within a few minutes.

FAQ

What are Amazon's main product image requirements?

Amazon's main product image (MAIN) must have a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), the product must fill at least 85% of the image frame, and the image must be at least 1000 pixels on the longest side. The preferred format is JPEG. Additional images (lifestyle, detail, infographic) can have any background and are more flexible. Images that fail these checks are rejected at upload or suppressed in search results.

Does Amazon require a white background for all product photos?

Only the main image (the first image shown in search results) requires a pure white background. Additional product images — lifestyle photos, scale shots, detail close-ups, and infographics — can have any background and can include text, models, and props. The white background rule applies strictly to the MAIN image slot only.

What pixel size do I need for Amazon product images?

Amazon requires a minimum of 1000 pixels on the longest side for images to be eligible for the zoom feature. Without zoom, conversion rates are significantly lower. Amazon recommends 1600 pixels on the longest side as the practical minimum, and up to 2000–3000 pixels for the sharpest zoom quality. The maximum file size accepted is 10 MB per image.

Can I use PNG for Amazon product images?

Amazon accepts JPEG, TIFF, PNG, and GIF formats. However, JPEG is strongly preferred — it produces smaller files at equivalent visual quality, uploads faster to Seller Central, and is the format Amazon's internal processing expects. PNG should only be used if your image genuinely requires a transparent background, and only for non-MAIN images. For the MAIN image, use JPEG on a white background.

How do I get the Amazon zoom feature to work?

Amazon's zoom feature activates automatically when your image is 1000 pixels or larger on the longest side. For high-quality zoom (which customers can drag to explore detail), 1600–2000 pixels is recommended. Make sure your image is sharp, not upscaled from a smaller source. An upscaled blurry zoom image looks worse than no zoom and can reduce conversion.
