Why browser-only matters for privacy

Most free online image compressors upload your file to a remote server for processing. This means your photo — which may contain your face, signature, ID number, or address — is transmitted over the internet and stored on a third-party server.

UploadReady processes your image using the Canvas API inside your own browser tab. The image bytes never leave your device. No server receives your file, no account is created, and no log of your photo exists outside your own browser session. This is the correct approach for identity documents, government ID photos, and financial records.

FAQ

How does browser-based image compression work?

UploadReady uses the browser's built-in Canvas API to re-encode your image as JPEG at a calculated quality level. The tool iterates quality settings until the output reaches your target KB — entirely inside your browser tab, never transmitted to any server.

Will compressing my image reduce its quality?

Yes — JPEG compression is lossy. For most targets (100 KB and above for standard portal photos), quality loss is minimal and not visible at normal screen sizes. Below 50 KB, quality loss becomes visible on high-resolution photos.

What is the maximum file size I can compress?

No hard limit — constrained by your browser's available memory. Most browsers handle images up to 20–30 MB without issues. Very large files (50 MB+) may slow down on low-memory devices.

What image formats does the free compressor support?

Input: JPEG, PNG, WebP. Output: JPEG (most portal-compatible). HEIC/HEIF files must be converted to JPEG first using the HEIC to JPG tool before compressing.

What is the difference between compressing and resizing an image?

Compression reduces file size by increasing JPEG loss — pixel dimensions stay the same. Resizing reduces pixel dimensions, which also reduces file size. UploadReady applies compression first; pixel dimensions are only reduced if compression alone cannot reach the target KB.
