Two ways to resize an image

By pixel dimensions — change the width and height in pixels. Use this when a portal specifies a required resolution (e.g. 400x400 px for a profile photo, or 35x45 mm at 300 DPI for a passport photo). The file size will change as a result, but the output dimensions will be exactly as specified.

By file size in KB — reduce the file to a specific kilobyte target (e.g. 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB). The tool adjusts compression quality or pixel dimensions to hit the target. Use this when a portal says "maximum 200 KB" without specifying pixel dimensions.

Supported formats

Format Best for Notes
JPEG (.jpg)Photos, portraits, documentsBest compression ratio for photographs; accepted by all portals
PNG (.png)Logos, screenshots, graphicsLossless; larger files than JPEG for photos; supports transparency
WebP (.webp)Web images, modern browsersSmaller than JPEG at same quality; not accepted by all portals

Common resize use cases

Use case Typical requirement
Passport / ID photo35x45 mm, under 50 KB, white background
Job application / CV photoUnder 200 KB, JPEG
Exam portal (UPSC, SSC, NEET)10–200 KB, JPG, white background
Email attachmentUnder 1 MB per image
LinkedIn profile photo400x400 px minimum, under 8 MB

FAQ

What is the difference between resizing and compressing an image?

Resizing changes pixel dimensions; compressing reduces encoding quality at the same dimensions. Both reduce file size. Use resize for dimension requirements, compress for file size (KB) requirements.

Does resizing an image affect quality?

Reducing dimensions discards pixel data, causing some quality loss. At screen viewing sizes, the result is still clear and sharp for most practical uses. Enlarging beyond the original dimensions causes visible blur.

What is the maximum file size this tool can handle?

Up to 50–100 MB on most devices. The tool runs in-browser, so the limit is your device's RAM. Very large files (200 MB+) process slowly on older hardware.

Does this image resizer work on mobile?

Yes. Works in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox on Android and iOS. No app install required. Select a photo from your gallery, resize, and download directly to your device.

How do I resize an image to exact pixel dimensions?

Enter the desired width and height in the pixel dimension fields. For a specific size like 400x300 px, enter both values. To maintain aspect ratio, enter only the width or height and let the tool calculate the other dimension automatically.
