Step-by-step guide for JEE photo preparation

  1. Take a recent passport photo on a white background. Use a plain white wall or a white sheet of paper as backdrop. Ensure even lighting — no harsh shadows.
  2. Crop the photo to 3.5 × 4.5 cm ratio. Your face should fill 70–80% of the frame. Eyes should be open and looking at the camera.
  3. Open this tool and upload the cropped photo. Set the target file size to between 50 KB and 150 KB — safely within the 10–200 KB range.
  4. Download the compressed JPG and verify the file size before uploading to the NTA portal.
  5. For the signature: sign on white paper using a dark blue or black pen, scan or photograph clearly, then compress to between 10 KB and 25 KB.

Common JEE application photo errors and how to fix them

  • File size below 10 KB. The compressed file is too small — increase the quality setting slightly and re-export.
  • File size above 200 KB. Use this tool to compress. Target 80–150 KB for comfortable headroom within the limit.
  • Wrong format (PNG, HEIC, WebP). Convert to JPG before uploading. This tool outputs JPG.
  • Coloured background. Use a background removal tool, replace with white, then compress.
  • Face not clearly visible or photo blurry. Re-take the photo under better lighting. A blurry photo cannot be fixed by compression alone.

FAQ

What is the JEE photo size in KB?

The JEE Main passport photo must be between 10 KB and 200 KB in file size. Target 80–150 KB for safe headroom. White or off-white background, JPG format, taken within the last 6 months.

What are the JEE signature dimensions?

The JEE signature must be between 4 KB and 30 KB. Signed on white paper with dark ink, scanned or photographed clearly, saved as JPG. A typed/digital signature is not accepted.

Are JPEG and JPG the same format?

Yes — identical format, different file extensions. JPG is the older three-character Windows extension. NTA's JPG requirement accepts both .jpg and .jpeg files.

Is a white background mandatory for JEE photo?

Yes. NTA mandates white or off-white plain background. Coloured or patterned backgrounds will result in rejection. Use a background removal tool if needed before compressing.

What happens if JEE photo is rejected during form submission?

The NTA portal will display an error indicating the reason. Fix the specific issue — file size (use this tool), format (convert to JPG), or background (replace with white) — then re-upload before submitting the form.
