How it works (3 steps)
- Take or select your photo. Use a plain white background, good lighting, neutral expression. Face the camera directly with eyes open and visible.
- Open UploadReady and set dimensions. Enter the pixel dimensions for your country (e.g. 600×600 px for US, 413×531 px for UK/Australia/India).
- Set file size and download. Enter the required KB limit (e.g. 240 KB for US, 50 KB for India online portal), download, and upload to the renewal portal.
Tips for a passport renewal photo that will be accepted
- Check the KB limit for your specific portal — the US online renewal portal requires under 240 KB. India's Passport Seva portal requires 20–50 KB. Submitting the wrong file size will cause rejection.
- Use a white wall as background — hang a white sheet if you do not have a plain white wall. Avoid shadows — stand at least 50 cm from the background and use diffused daylight from a window in front of you, not behind.
- No glasses, no hats, no filters — most countries no longer accept glasses in passport photos. Filters, stickers, and colour corrections that alter your appearance will result in rejection.
- Use the rear camera for sharper photos — smartphone rear cameras produce significantly higher resolution and less distortion than front cameras. Have someone take the photo with your phone's rear camera at arm's length.
FAQ
What size photo is required for US passport renewal online?
The US online passport renewal portal requires a square JPEG photo at least 600×600 px, between 11 KB and 240 KB. The face must fill 50–69% of the frame against a plain white or off-white background. Photo must be taken within the last 6 months.
Can I take my own passport photo at home for renewal?
Yes — home photos are accepted for online and mail-in renewal if they meet the technical requirements. Use a white wall background, natural light, and the rear camera of your smartphone. Resize and compress with UploadReady before uploading.
Does the passport renewal photo require a white background?
Yes — most countries require white or off-white. UK accepts light grey or cream. Patterned, coloured, or shadowed backgrounds will be rejected. A plain white wall or white sheet is the safest option.
What is the difference between a digital passport photo and a printed one?
Digital photos are uploaded to the online renewal portal and must meet pixel and KB requirements. Printed photos (2×2 inch or 35×45 mm) are used for mail-in applications. For online renewal, you only need the digital version.
Does the online renewal portal accept a selfie for the passport photo?
The US online renewal portal (launched 2024) accepts smartphone photos if they meet the technical requirements. Use the rear camera rather than the selfie camera to avoid wide-angle distortion that can cause rejection.
